The First Commandment simply says, “You shall have on other gods.”  All of the commandments condemn us as we shall see during these coming days.  However, this one is broken every time we sin, no matter which commandment we break.  Adultery, disobedience of those in authority, stealing, lying, cursing and swearing or any other sin is a sin against the sovereign Lord.  This was and still is Satan’s deception, “You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5).  Man has many gods; but self-worship (selfishness) is the god that rules his life.  We learned from Luther’s Small Catechism, “We should fear, love and trust in God above all things.”  Who of us stands in holy awe of his Majesty?  Who of us loves him with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind?  Who of us never doubts his promises or lives by faith all of the time?   Today we think about the First Commandment.  May it lead us to say, “God have mercy on me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13).  Then use your nail to place that accusation of God’s law over Jesus’ head.  His cross has wiped out the damning evidence that stood against us having nailed it to the cross.  Search the Word:  Exodus 20:1-17.  Romans 3:9-20.
